Whether you’re soaking in the seasonal charm or just looking for a reason to get out and about, this is the month to embrace all the little joys of the season.

Whether you’re visiting for the weekend or sticking around for the entire month, Charlotte and the surrounding areas offer plenty of ways to make the most of this time of year. To help you enjoy the best of the season, we’ve rounded up FIVE must-see spots to check out. From festive experiences to cozy hangouts, these are the places you’ll want to visit this December.

1. Charlotte

Charlotte may be small, but it’s the kind of place that feels like a peaceful retreat—a quiet, rural escape that wraps you up in warmth, especially on a chilly day. If you’ve got a bit of time to explore, make sure to stop by the Old Brick Store. It’s cozy and full of charm, serving up delicious breakfast and lunch options. And, fair warning—you might just leave with something you never knew you needed, but now can’t live without.

If you’re craving more options, head over to the Red Onion for a breakfast-and-lunch experience you won’t forget. When dinner rolls around, Backyard Bistro is the place to be. And don’t forget the Charlotte General Store—it’s a treasure trove of essentials you forgot to pack (and a few fun gifts you didn’t realize you were missing until you saw them).

Don’t miss the Charlotte Central School Holiday Market, featuring a wonderful selection of gifts and food from local artisans. It’s happening on Saturday, December 7th, from 10 AM to 2 PM at 408 Hinesburg Road in Charlotte.

2. Downtown Shelburne

Just an 8-minute drive from Charlotte’s West Village, Shelburne is where small-town charm meets holiday magic. Picture a cozy village green, twinkling lights, and charming shops—it’s like stepping into a Hallmark Christmas movie, minus the drama.

Shopping for little ones? Jaime Two Coats is a must-stop. And for everyone else on your list, head to Flying Pig Bookstore, In Full Bloom, and Shelburne Country Store. These spots have a little something for everyone.

Eat

When it’s time to eat, Shelburne has plenty to offer. For an upscale experience, Electra’s Restaurant is a great choice (reservations are recommended). If you’re in the mood for something more casual, Barkeaters is the spot.

For breakfast or lunch, Le Marche Cafe is a local favorite, or you can cozy up at Rustic Roots for a laid-back, delicious meal.

If you’re in town on December 6th, don’t miss the Shelburne’s Annual Tree Lighting & Carol Singing On the Village Green! The celebration kicks off at 5:30 pm and is a great way to ring in the season with the community.

From late November through January 1st, the Shelburne Museum transforms into a stunning winter wonderland with its Winter Lights. Wander through outdoor exhibits glowing with twinkling lights—it’s an unforgettable experience. During this time, you can also enjoy special events like the one-night-only Ice Bar (December 6, 2024), sensory-friendly evenings, and auto-driving nights for a cozy light show from the comfort of your car. Whether you’re with family or on a romantic date, this magical display is the perfect way to celebrate the season and create lasting memories. Tickets are limited so be sure to buy your tickets in advance!

3. Vergennes

A 15-minute drive south of Charlotte, you’ll discover the little city of Vergennes, a hidden gem with a quaint downtown that’s impossible not to love. Whether you’re strolling down its picturesque streets or popping into its unique shops, Vergennes offers the kind of charm that makes you want to linger.

If you’re feeling hungry, be sure to check out 3 Squares Cafe and Vergennes Laundry, both offering delicious breakfast and lunch options that will hit the spot.

For dinner, you can’t go wrong with the Black Sheep Bistro—our family’s favorite for special occasions. Pro tip: order the halibut. You won’t regret it!

And for the ultimate sweet treat, don’t miss lu•lu. Their inventive, mouthwatering ice cream is unlike anything you’ve had before—trust us, it’s worth the stop!

Kick off your December with the Ho Ho Ho Holiday Stroll, held every first Saturday in December. Meet Santa and Mrs. Claus, enjoy the magical tree lighting, listen to carolers, and warm up by fire pits. Just a 20-minute drive away, Pine Street in Burlington is one of my favorite spots. It’s an eclectic mix mix of shopping, food, and art that makes every visit feel like an adventure. While it’s not the most walkable area, there’s plenty of parking, so you can easily park and explore at your own pace. Whether you’re checking out local galleries, grabbing a bite, or hunting for something unique in one of the shops, Pine Street has something for everyone! Below is a short list. Start your visit at 4T2D, where you’ll find a fantastic selection of beanies and clothing—everything is made right on-site in Vermont! Don’t miss their cozy floor poofs—their impressive solution to zero waste.

A little further down the road, you’ll come across Slate, a shop filled with a curated collection of stylish home goods and unique furnishings. Whether you’re looking to refresh your own space or find the perfect gift for someone special, Slate has something that’s sure to impress.

Eat

When it’s time to eat, we’ve got you covered! For a casual lunch or dinner, Pizza 44 is always a great choice. If you’re in the mood for fresh, flavorful Mexican-inspired fare, head over to New World Tortilla (just note, they’re open weekdays only!).

Got a sweet tooth? You won’t want to miss Champlain Chocolates’ flagship location, right in the same building as 4T2D. Their hot chocolate bar is the perfect treat for warming up on a chilly day—trust us, it’s a must!

A 25-minute drive down the road from Charlotte’s west village, Church Street in Burlington is the place to be for a dose of holiday magic. As you stroll down the cobblestone street, you’ll discover a little something for everyone. Whether you’re in the mood to shop local for unique gifts or indulge in some delicious local fare, Church Street has it all.

There’s a huge array of shops along Church Street. Just walk along and you’ll find something that speaks to you! We’re big fans of Outdoor Gear Exchange for all your winter gear and gift needs—it’s the go-to spot for everything you’ll need to embrace the season.

Just off Church Street, make sure to check out Common Deer for one-of-a-kind Vermont-inspired gifts (bonus: it’s owned and operated by a local Charlotte family!).

A little further down the street, you’ll find the Ski Rack, perfect for picking up more winter gear and essentials before hitting the slopes.

Eat

If you’re in the mood for a cozy meal, head to Leunig’s Bistro & Cafe. It’s a classic spot that serves up delicious dishes, perfect for a relaxed lunch or dinner.

For the ultimate hot cocoa experience, don’t miss Lake Champlain Chocolates—they’ve got the best in town.

Just a short stroll from Church Street, you’ll find The Farm House Tap and Grill and El Cortijo Taqueria, both great choices for a casual lunch or dinner.

Church Street feels like something straight out of a holiday movie, but the real magic comes to life at the annual Christmas tree lighting and Santa parade the day after Thanksgiving. With regular visits from Santa, train rides for the little ones, and the entire street aglow with festive lights, it’s enough to make even the Grinch catch some holiday cheer! For a fun family outing, head down to the waterfront and explore Echo, a fantastic museum that’s perfect for kids and adults alike.

Day Trips …

Feeling like a drive?

At one-hour away, Stowe is gorgeous any time of year. An hour drive away from Charlotte, it’s particularly pretty at Christmas. Shopping and dining abound. For fun, check out the Gentle Giants Sleigh & Wagon Rides or try dog sledding with Umiak Outdoor Outfitters when there’s snow on the ground.

A two-hour drive might be worth it to visit a Reindeer Farm. We have never been, but it’s tops on our list for this season. We’ll update this article once we’ve made the visit!
